Frailty(2002)
Rating out of 5 possible lobsters :
"No soul is safe"
The movie opens like a classic episode of Little House on the Prairie with 2 sons sitting down for supper with
their father. They discuss how their respective days went and everything is like a Norman Rockwell painting until
their father (played by Bill Paxton who also directs) has a vision of an Angel who assigns him a mission. The
angel doesn’t want him to go door to door peddling religion on Sunday Mornings instead he wants the family to
destroy the demons on Earth. That’s when the story begins to turn into an episode of the Walton’s on acid. The
children react to their father’s vision at the opposite ends of the Freudian rainbow. We are torn between those
two lines of thought for most of the movie, the first being that the father has watched a little too much Touched
by An Angel or that their father is crazier than a crap house rat. They are unable to begin fighting the war against
the Demons until they receive the hit list (this isn’t your average black list) from the angel and given the tools to
do it with (These are the kind of tools that would make a lumber Jack proud). Nothing says clear cutting like an
Axe with the name “OTIS” engraved on it. The movie has enough surprising twists and turns throughout the plot to keep you interested for the payoff in the end. Believe me there is enough Manson Family Value moments
throughout the movie that you don’t know who in the family is in jeopardy and the “What ifs?”of what actually is
happening is possible or not. Overall Bill Paxton does a solid job as a first time director and even better job as
the heavenly father as matter of fact all the performances are great especially the ones delivered by the two sons.
This movie will make you think twice before you pull Jim and Tammy Faye Baker when the collection plate is being passed around. This movie gets 3 ½ lobsters out of 5….can I GET AN AMEN!
