Donnie Darko(2001)

Rating out of 5 possible lobsters :
"Dark, Darkest, Darko"
Don’t let the title of this under appreciated gem from 2001 fool you. With a solid cast in place that includes the
likes of Jake Gyllenhaal (Yes the guy from Bubble Boy!), Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze (In an uncharacteristic role), in a small budget horror/psychological thriller that delivers. The basic plot line is about
student in High School who is suffering from some form of delusion (or is he) who is having visions of a demonic
rabbit that informs him that the world is ending. This is the back drop to a much deeper plot that deals with
family issues, dating, time, and existence. It not only sets you up for the make you think twice ending but delivers
on the level of the 6th Sense and Stir of Echo’s. I can see why people may not rush to rent this but it is definitely one of the most unique films I have seen this year.
The movie takes it characters and subject matter seriously which brings it head and shoulders above the standard
teen slasher films. All the performances are outstanding but the most note worthy is delivered by Jake Gyllenhaal
who I think equals his stirring performance in October Sky. My favorite scenes in the film revolve around the
family and their interactions and reactions to each other. The movie has enough little twists to keep you interested
as you slowly tumble down the rabbit hole. In a way the movie even reminded of Magnolia the way all the
interweaving story lines all come together for the pay off in the end. I do have a few minor criticisms with regards
to the standard crazy old woman and some of the after school special moments with the school bully and his girl
friend. Overall this is one horror movie that doesn’t suck and well worth searching out now that it is on video. If
you like smart, funny, edge of your seat thrillers this is for you, if not go rent The In Crowd or stand in line for Jason X! Donnie Darko gets 5 Lobsters!
